Work has begun on building the Netherlands’ biggest solar farm, which will will cover 165 hectares of farm land in Groningen province when completed.
In total, 330,000 solar panels will fill the site, close to the junction between the A7 motorway and the N33. The solar farm will provide enough energy for 70,000 homes.
Investors will put more than €100 million into the project, which will include a massive battery to store excess energy produced on sunny days.
The park will also include measures to “stimulate nature”, with waterways, as well as a cycling route and picnic tables to get locals on board, broadcaster RTV Noord reported.
Some of the money raised by the sale of electricity will also be given back to the local community to fund events and cultural activities.
The first phase of the project will be completed by the end of this year, the rest in early 2026.
