Dutch military police have arrested a man who reportedly forced his way into the parliamentary complex while armed with a knife.
The authorities have not disclosed the suspect’s gender or provided details about the weapon. However, sources told broadcaster NOS that the suspect is a man in his 30s who was carrying a knife.
Eyewitnesses reported hearing security guards shout, “Everyone, get away from here.”
According to the Telegraaf, the man jumped over the security barriers which led to the main debating chamber.
Neither the police nor the parliamentary information service have confirmed these details, stating only that the investigation is ongoing.
The main entrances to the lower house were temporarily closed but have since reopened. Debates which were underway have also resumed.
The lower house of parliament has been based in a new, temporary location on the Bezuidenhoutseweg in the centre of The Hague since 2021, while the Binnenhof complex undergoes major renovations.
