Man jailed for shooting dead Dutch soldier in street brawl in US

A man who shot dead a Dutch soldier in Indianapolis has been sentenced to 105 years in jail after a jury found him guilty of murder.
Shamar Duncan opened fire on a group of Dutch army soldiers outside a hotel where they were staying during a training exercise in August 2022, after getting into a fight with them.
Corporal Simmie Postema, 26, died from his injuries, while two of his companions were wounded but survived. All three were commandos based at the barracks in Roosendaal.
Duncan admitted to firing the shots, but insisted he had not intended to kill anyone. In court he apologised for making “a tragic mistake”.
The soldiers got into a fight with Duncan and his two brothers as they walked back from a nightclub at around 3.30am. The brothers drove away in a pick-up truck, then doubled back and fired at the soldiers outside the Hampton Inn.
Local prosecutor Ryan Mears described the shooting as “yet another example of the toxic and tragic combination of guns and alcohol”.
“Simmie Poetsema was a decorated military veteran who dedicated his young life to serving and protecting others,” he added.
A judge in Marion County sentenced Duncan to 60 years for murder, 35 years for attempted murder and 10 years for aggravated battery. The sentences will run consecutively, meaning he will theoretically spend 105 years behind bars.
