A total of 172,000 people died in the Netherlands last year, an increase of 2,500 compared to 2023, national statistics agency CBS said on Tuesday.
The new figures show that life expectancy for men has risen slightly but remains virtually unchanged for women, the CBS reported.
Last year, 87,200 women and 84,900 men died. The number of deaths among women has outstripped men since 1997, as women tend to live longer and die at a later age, the CBS said. However, more men than women died during the coronavirus pandemic.
The updated figures indicate that a baby boy born in 2024 can expect to live to 80.5 years, an increase of three months compared to 2023, while a girl can expect to live to 83.3 years, a decrease of one month.
In 2024, 57% of those who died were over the age of 80, and 69,200 people were receiving some form of long-term care at home.
