Late Taylor winner for Ajax opens up title race as PSV implode
Ajax blew the title race wide open as Kenneth Taylor scored an injury-time winner against Feyenoord to claim all three points in the Klassieker, while PSV dropped points for the third time in four matches.
Ajax went ahead towards the end of the first half when Brian Brobbey pounced after Timo Wellenreuther spilled a shot by Steven Berghuis into his path. The goal was initially ruled out for offside against Berghuis, but the decision was overturned by the VAR.
Quinten Timber equalised when he found space to shoot in a crowded penalty area in the 67th minute, and when Wout Weghorst missed a penalty for Ajax the game seemed destined for a draw.
But in the eighth minute of injury time Anton Gaaei hit a perfectly measured cross from the touchline and the onrushing Taylor slid the ball past Wellenreuther.
The result leaves Ajax five points behind PSV with two games in hand, after PSV surrendered a two-goal lead in the closing minutes of their clash with NEC.
Luuk de Jong scored from close range to give the league leaders the lead early in the second half.
Sami Ouaissa equalised when he tapped in a rebound from a free-kick, but two quick goals by Ismael Saibari and Johan Bakayoko looked to have made the game safe.
But an underhit backpass by Ryan Flamingo allowed Kento Shiogai to steal in and beat Walter Benitez, and PSV’s misery was complete in the fifth minute when Benitez fumbled a corner and Byran Linssen, on his return to the Eredivisie after two and a half years in Japan, scored from a narrow angle.
Utrecht draw again
Another six-goal thriller saw the points shared between the surprise packages of the first half of the season, Utrecht, and the form team since Christmas, PEC Zwolle.
PEC took a two-goal lead into the interval as Dylan Vente scored low into the botttom corner from a free-kick by Jamiro Monteiro, before Davy van den Berg showed tremendous skill to take down a high ball from Filip Krastev and roll the ball past Vasilis Barkas.
Utrecht were level 15 minutes into the second half through Anthony Descotte and Oscar Fraulo. Vente put PEC back in front with his sixth goal in five games, but Nick Viergever nodded in an equaliser after Mike Hauptmeijer had spilled a shot into his path to rescue a third successive draw for Utrecht.
Almere in trouble
At the bottom of the table RKC Waalwijk won a relegation six-pointer in Almere to leave their rivals stranded in last place.
Almere City struck after 17 minutes through Junior Kadile, but a red card for Joey Jacobs early in the second half turned the match on its head. RKC equalised when Mohamed Ihattaren turned in a corner after 58 minutes, and three more goals followed, including a free-kick by Ihattaren in the last minute that went in off the post and the ribs of goalkeeper Nordin Bakker.
RKC remain six points behind 16th-placed Sparta, who beat Groningen with a header by Tobias Lauritsen to move within a point of their opponents.
Steijn double
Sem Steijn scored twice in two minutes for Twente, the second a flying volley from close range, to give his team a 2-1 lead at Go Ahead Eagles and take his goal tally for the season to 17.
But the home team had the last word when Naci Ünüvar was penalised for bundling over Mats Deijl at a corner and Go Ahead’s captain Deijl stepped up to score from the spot.
Heerenveen coach Robin van Persie gave a debut to 17-year-old striker Eser Gürbüz against Fortuna Sittard and the teenager was on the brink of a fairytale start when he scored in the 82nd minute to give his team a 2-1 lead.
But Rodrigo Guth found the net from a corner in the last minute to save a point for Fortuna, while Van Persie was left fuming by an oversight that allowed the Limburgers to play with 12 men for half a minute when Jasper Dahlhaus failed to notice he had been substituted.
Heracles notched up their third successive 1-1 draw at NAC, after Elias Ómarsson’s early header for the home side was cancelled out by Juho Talvitie’s cutback and low shot after 10 minutes of the second half.
