PSV were hit with a sucker punch in Turin as Juventus substitute Samuel Mbangula scored a late winner to give the Italians the advantage in their Champions League play-off tie.
Peter Bosz’s side looked set to head back to Eindhoven with a draw after veteran Croatian midfielder Ivan Perisic equalised with a smart finish in his first European match for the club.
But the defensive frailties which have dogged the Eredivisie champions in recent weeks cost them dear again as Juventus twice profited from indecision at the back.
The Italians won 3-1 when the two clubs met in the group stage in September and looked ready to serve up more of the same as they dominated the opening 10 minutes, with Kenan Yildiz going closest to opening the scoring.
PSV’s first chance came after 19 minutes when Noa Lang pitched a cross onto the head of Luuk de Jong, but the striker was unable to steer the ball on target.
Juventus went ahead. after half an hout when Federico Gatti easily intercepted a pass from deep by Jerdy Veerman and as PSV failed to clear their lines, Weston McKennie popped up on the edge of the penalty area to hit a rocket into the top corner.
Ryan Flamingo missed a chance to level the scores early in the second half when he was unable to control Luuk de Jong’s knock-down with his head, under pressure from the Juventus defence.
The equaliser came just as the Italians were reasserting themselves. Noa Lang found space on the left and his speculative shot flicked off a defender before falling in front of Perisic, who controlled it with his right foot before squeezing a shot inside the near post with his left.
PSV had to absorb plenty of pressure but looked to be holding out until eight minutes from the end, when Benitez could only push a low cross into the path of Mbangula to give the 21-year-old Belgian striker the simplest of finishes.
Guus Til had a chance to snatch an equaliser in injury time, but he was unable to beat Michele Di Gregorio from close range as Renato Veiga closed him down.
The second leg will be in Eindhoven on February 19. The other Dutch club in the play-off round, Feyenoord, face AC Milan in their first-leg match in Rotterdam on Wednesday.
