Fashion chain Vanilia is latest high street store to disappear
Fashion store chain Vanilia has been declared bankrupt after posting losses running into millions in recent years.
The company, which has 18 branches around the Netherlands and an online store, employs 200 people in store, as well as 350 in Turkey and 95 at its headquarters in Wormerveer.
Vanilia’s collection of women’s clothing and accessories was also sold in department stores such as De Bijenkorf.
Michel Hulzebosch, who took over the company in the 1990s, told NOS he was devastated by the ruling by the district court in Amsterdam.
“What a tragedy, for our staff as well,” he said. “It’s such a shame for such a fine, sustainable company. Up until a week ago I thought we were going to turn things round.”
Hulzebosch said the company had been badly hit by the coronavirus downturn and recent wage rises driven by high inflation, but he still hoped a buyer could be found. “I want a second life for this company,” he said.
It is the latest blow for Dutch high street chains that have struggled to stay afloat in recent years. The number of bankruptcies in the retail sector increased by more than 20% in 2024, including prominent names such as Blokker, Dunkin’ Donuts, Game Mania and The Body Shop.
