Several Dutch skiers have had to be rescued after getting into difficulty in the Austrian Alps, police have said.

One 30-year-old man was seriously injured when he collided with a tree in Oberperfuss, Tyrol, at around 1pm on Wednesday.

The man lost control while skiing down a red piste. He was given first aid at the scene before being airlifted to hospital in Innsbruck. The extent of his injuries and the cause of the accident were not disclosed.

In a separate incident in Bergwang, a 45-year-old man was seriously injured after he collided with another skier and hit a stone. He was also taken to hospital in Innsbruck.

The other skier stopped at the scene but left without giving his contact details. Police are trying to trace the man, described as a French speaker aged between 40 and 50. He wore a beige hooded jacket and rust-coloured salopettes.

Five teenagers were rescued after becoming stranded at 1600m altitude in an area without chairlifts in the Fiss-Ladis area on Wednesday.

The four male and one female youth, aged between 17 and 19, were led down the mountain by a ski rescue team after raising the alarm. None of them was harmed, police said.
