Two short films by Dutch directors have been nominated for this year’s Oscars – Ik ben geen Robot (I’m Not a Robot) by Victoria Warmerdam and the animated film Wander to Wonder by Nina Gantz.

The nominations were announced in Los Angeles on Thursday.

Warmerdam’s film, nominated for the best live action short film, is about a woman who continually fails to pass the “captcha test” – an online test to prove you are not a robot – and starts to wonder if she might actually be one.

Animated short contenderWander to Wonder is about three dolls who star in a 1980s children’s television series but are left alone in the studio when the show’s creator dies.

The last time a short Dutch film was nominated for an Oscar was A Single Life in 2015. The last Dutch winner was in 2000, when Michaël Dudok de Wit took the Oscar for the animated short Father and Daughter.

Babygirl, Halina Reijn’s film starring Nicole Kidman, is nominated for best background music.
