Tourists pull woman out of car sinking in Amsterdam canal
Two tourists have jumped into an Amsterdam canal to rescue a woman whose car drove over the edge into the water, according to local broadcaster AT5.
The accident happened on the Keizersgracht, and AT5 photos show a small black car first floating and then being winched out of the water.
“They did well,” a fire brigade spokesman told the broadcaster.
The car ended up in the water shortly after 8.30 am and eyewitnesses alerted the emergency services, who turned up with a diving team to help.
But the two tourists had already jumped into the water, swum over and pulled the women out of the sinking car.

All three were given blankets to warm up, and even though the water temperature was under 6°, none are likely to suffer the consequences of the chilly dip, AT5 said.
Several cars end up in Amsterdam’s canals every year and just last month two were pulled out of the city’s Bloemgracht. A handful of people also die falling into canals on an annual basis, usually men who had been drinking and then decided to urinate into the water.
