The Netherlands is officially in the grip of a flu epidemic, health research institute Nivel said on Wednesday. Several different viruses are in circulation, Nivel said.

The number of cases has been rising and now at least 53 in 100,000 people have reported to their family doctor with flu-like symptoms for two weeks, the epidemic is a reality, Nivel said. Last week, the reporting ratio was 76 to 100,000.

In 2024, there was also an official flu epidemic, which lasted from the end of January to the end of March.

The number of cases has already led to some problems and some hospitals have already cancelled routine operations because of the lack of staff. Schools too report more pupils off sick and more stand-in teachers, broadcaster NOS reported.

The public health institute RIVM recommends that people who are in contact with those in vulnerable health wear a face mask, and keep their distance as much as possible to reduce the risk of transmission.
