Snow blankets the Netherlands, until the rain takes over
Snow blanketed much of the Netherlands on Sunday morning but, in line with forecasts, quickly melted as the temperature rose and rain moved in.
However, the slippery conditions did lead to several accidents on the roads, and several dozen flights were cancelled at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. Travellers were urged to check with their airline for up-to-date information.
Most of the snow fell in the east and central parts of the country, with up to 6 cm recorded in places.
Weather forecasters say the snow will last longest in the northern provinces, where the temperature will remain closer to 0°. In the rest of the country it will have risen to around 10° by the end of the day.
The KNMI weather bureau says Monday and Tuesday will remain wet and mild but by Wednesday the temperatures will drop and there could be more snow next weekend.
