PSV Eindhoven survived a scare to progress to the quarter-finals of the Dutch Cup after being taken to extra time by Eerste Divisie side Excelsior.

The league leaders were on the brink of going out when Lance Duijvestijn ghosted into the penalty area and slammed a low shot into the corner to give the visitors a 3-1 lead in the 80th minute.

PSV equalised in the seventh minute of injury time when Luuk de Jong’s knock-on found Ismael Saibari unmarked, after Ricardo Pepi had pulled a goal back on 86 minutes.

Pepi gave PSV the lead for the first time in the first half of extra-time before Ivan Perisic added a fifth, while Excelsior had the last word when Richie Omorowa converted a penalty in the 117th minute.

PSV coach Peter Bosz praised his opponents’ combative approach to the game. “It’s disappointing that we didn’t win in 90 minutes. That was down to us, but I enjoyed their effort and the way they pressed.”

Ajax out

Elsewhere AZ Alkmaar knocked out Ajax to claim their second win in a month over the Amsterdam club.

Wouter Goes put AZ ahead in the first half when Remko Pasveer parried a ball from a corner into his path. Mexx Meerdinck sealed the win in the 89th minute when he clipped a loose ball past the goalkeeper from close range.

Noordwijk also progressed to the quarter-finals by beating another non-league side, Barendrecht, with a goal in extra time by Arantis Roep.

The match featured the first on-field announcement to explain a decision by the video referee. Referee Marc Nagtegaal booked Barendrecht’s Wouter Vermeer for a lunging tackle in the first half, but was asked to consider upgrading the card to red.

Nagtegaal told the crowd that he viewed the challenge as careless rather than reckless, allowing Vermeer to stay on the pitch.
