Minister says “no” to personalised car number plates in NL

Infrastructure Barry Madlener (PVV) has shot down a proposal supported by his own party to allow personalised number plates.

VVD, NSC and BBB voted in favour of a proposal made by PVV MP Hidde Heutink to introduce a system of personalised plates similar to the one in place in Belgium.

Subject to restrictions Belgians motorists keen to display their personal preferences on their cars pay €1000 for a personalised number plate.

Madlener said in a brief to MPs such a system would be too expensive and too complex citing an amount of over €100 million while the revenue would come to just tens of millions.

Dutch number plates do not use vowels so that they do not inadvertently feature words, and officials also take steps out controversial acronyms as well.

In 2010, the RDW issued several hundred cars a number plate featuring the letter combination NSB – the initials of the Dutch national socialist party during World War II, and was forced into a quick recall.

PVV, PSV, KKK and TBS (the abbreviation for psychiatric prison) are also on the banned list.
