Man arrested after fire breaks out in asylum seekers’ residence
A man has been arrested after a fire broke out in a former hotel in Eindhoven used to house asylum seekers.
The blaze began in a room on the third floor of the building on Anthony Fokkerweg, which was previously a Novotel, at around 3am.
Two people were taken to hospital by ambulance after being treated for smoke inhalation. Police said there were no other casualties, but all 170 residents were evacuated from the building as a precaution.
The fire was confined to one room of the hotel. A man was arrested on suspicion of arson, but police would not say if he was one of the residents.
AD.nl reported that the suspect was one of the two people who received treatment in hospital. Enquiries are continuing.
