The Dutch registered over 380,000 new cars last year, a rise of 3.1% on 2023, according to figures from motoring organisations Bovag and RAI Vereniging.

The rise is partly due to a surge in December, when 37,000 new cars were sold, as well as the end of subsidies for electric private cars, the organisations said.

Private buyers were able to claim €2,950 to help them buy a new electric car and €2,000 for a second hand one up to the end of the year.

Hybrid cars remained the most popular, accounting for 159,705 new car sales last year, followed by 132,166 fully electric cars. Nevertheless, petrol-driven cars still account for 75% of the Dutch fleet, hybrid cars 11% and fully electric vehicles 5.4%.

The Tesla model Y topped the 2024 sales list, with just over 19,000 new cars hitting the Dutch roads. The Kira Niro was well back in second place, followed by the Volvo EX30 and Tesla model 3.
