Political parties GroenLinks and the Socialists earned the most from their supporters last year, but this is down to compulsory contributions by politicians, according to the latest overview of political donations by the home affairs ministry.

Both parties have added over €1 million to bank balances in 2024. GroenLinks MPs and councillors are required to donate 10% of their salary to the party while SP parliamentarians are required to hand over their entire salary and are given €3,276 per month in return.

The VVD, traditionally the party of business, has had just two large donations this year€100,000 from an IT entrepreneur and €29,000 from a lawyer. This, says the AD, is notable because the party earned over €1.6 million in 2023, election year, via fundraising events hosted by property tycoon Cor van Zadelhoff.

The far-right FVD, which had considerable donations in previous years, had just one large donation, of €10,000.

The far-right PVV, PvdA, and new party NSC had no large donations to report. The NSC will not accept any donations of more than €850.

Political parties are required by law to report all donations of at least €10,000 to the ministry within three days of it being paid. Gifts of over €1,000 must be made public and parties may not accept more than €100,000.

Dutch political parties in parliament are largely supported by the taxpayer, based on their membership and number of MPs.
