Feyenoord 3-0 Bayern Munich: Gimenez double as Priske feels heat
Feyenoord booked their place in the next round of the Champions League with a scintillating defeat of Bayern that looks likely to be Brian Priske’s swansong as head coach.
The Dane watched his team soak up pressure from the German giants before hitting them on the counter, as Santiago Gimenez latched on to a deep pass from Gijs Smal and rifled in a shot that gave Manuel Neuer no chance.
The Mexican, who was linked to AC Milan this week, added a second from the penalty spot just before half-time after Calvin Stengs was brought down on the edge of the penalty area.
Bayern mustered 14 shots on goal in the first half but found Justin Bijlow in inspired form. The goalkeeper saved at point-blank range from Harry Kane and stretched to tip a wayward defensive header from Stengs over the crossbar.
Bijlow twice denied Jamal Musiala early in the second half as Bayern sought a way back into the game, while David Hancko somehow diverted a speculative shot by Dayot Upamecano round the post with his thigh.
Sacking rumours
Leroy Sané had the best chance for the Germans when he headed against the post with the goal gaping, before substitute Ayase Ueda beat Neuer with a shot into the corner from another counter-attack for Feyenoord’s third.
The result came at the end of a day in which rumours swirled round De Kuip that Priske was on the brink of being dismissed regardless of the team’s result on the pitch.
Danish newspaper Tipsbladet claims the Rotterdam club has already lined up Slot’s former number two, Marino Pusic, to replace him. Pusic settled in the Netherlands and played for several Dutch clubs after fleeing Croatia in the 1990s.
The 47-year-old Priske arrived in Rotterdam in the summer from Sparta Prague following the departure of Arne Slot for Liverpool, but has been unable to match his predecessor’s success. Feyenoord currently lie in fourth place in the Eredivisie, 10 points behind leaders PSV.
Priske did not confirm or deny the rumours, but told Ziggo Sport: “That’s football. If a club like Feyenoord don’t get enough points there are always questions about the coach. That’s how it is and I accept it.”
If Pusic, currently in charge of Ukrainian club Shakhtar Donetsk, takes over he is guaranteed at least three Champions League matches thanks to Priske’s efforts. Feyenoord will try to secure a seeding in the play-off round when they travel to Lille next Wednesday.
