Eindhoven University hit by cyber attack, perpetrators unknown
Eindhoven University of Technology has suspended classes and exams following a cyber attack at the weekend.
The university took its internal network offline on Saturday. “We noticed suspicious activity on the network at 9pm and decided to take the servers offline a few hours later,” a university spokesman said.
It is as yet unclear who is behind the cyber attack. The university has not been contacted and no one has claimed responsibility. IC staff are currently searching the system for clues.
The buildings and offline facilities are still available to students and staff but they no longer have access to email and other information.
“We have taken this step to prevent worse,” the university said in a statement. Officials expect that the system will be online again by Tuesday at the earliest.
In 2019 Maastricht University was hit by a ransomware attack, forcing it to pay out €200,000 in cryprocurrency. Part of that money was later retrieved and because it had increased in value the university made a €300,000 profit.
