Dutch prime minister Dick Schoof has issued a brief statement on social media, congratulating Donald Trump on his inauguration as US president.

“The Netherlands and the United States have long-standing historic ties,” Schoof said. “We’re strong allies and work together closely, both bilaterally and in international forums like Nato. I look forward to continuing this partnership.”

Foreign minister Caspar Veldkamp addressed a similar message to the new secretary of state Marco Rubio. “The United States and the Netherlands share longstanding ties and remain strong allies,” he said. “I look forward to working with you to strengthen our transatlantic relationship.”

The US is the Netherlands’ largest export market outside the EU, with the total value in 2023 exceeding €51 billion. Oil and oil products, specialised machinery, and pharmaceutical products were the three biggest export sectors.

The US is currently the second-largest supplier of imported goods to the Netherlands, behind Germany, with imports of US crude oil and gas seeing a particular increase in 2023.
