Dutch players out of Australian Open after Lamens loses in R2
Suzan Lamens was knocked out of the Australian Open in straight sets to end Dutch interest in the opening Grand Slam tournament of the year in the second round.
Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic, returning to the game after taking a year out to have a daughter, proved too strong for the world number 77, taking the first set 6-1 and going 4-1 ahead in the second set.
Lamens staged a comeback to force a tie-break, but Bencic, the 2020 Olympic champion, took the first of three match points to win.
“She was really good in the first set, super aggressive,” Lamens said of her defeat. “I gave her space to play her own game that she plays very well.”
Lamens was the only Dutch player to make it to round two after Arantxa Rus and the top two men, Tallon Griekspoor and Botic van de Zandschulp, both lost their opening matches.
