Dutch embassy in Congo is one of several attacked by protestors
The Dutch embassy in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), was among several foreign diplomatic missions targeted by demonstrators on Tuesday afternoon.
Embassies representing the United States, France, Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda were also attacked, the Dutch foreign ministry said. The Dutch embassy shares a property with Belgium and a fire was set close to the entrance, the Belgian foreign ministry said. That has since been put out.
Meanwhile, Congo security services have been called to protect the buildings and “the situation appears to have stabilised”, the Dutch spokesman said.
The unrest follows the recent capture of the eastern Congolese city of Goma by rebel forces, who the United Nations has alleged receive support from neighbouring Rwanda.
The targeted embassies are linked to countries perceived to have played roles in the ongoing conflict within the DRC. Belgium was the country’s colonial ruler.
Dutch minister of foreign affairs Caspar Veldkamp issued a warning for Dutch nationals in the DRC, advising them to stay indoors due to potential security risks. “Our priority is to guarantee the safety of our colleagues in this serious situation,” Veldkamp said.
