Design error affects 100 bridges and viaducts, minister confirms
Around 100 bridges and viaducts in the Netherlands may require more urgent maintenance because of a design error, infrastructure minister Barry Madlener told MPs this week.
The problems could lead to heavy vehicles being banned from some constructions, or the need for extra support measures, he said in answer to questions from MPs.
The problems have arisen following the use of a type of construction brace that is more vulnerable to rust if it comes into contact with water contaminated by gritting salt.
Not all bridges and viaducts need immediate action, but the ministry’s transport department has drawn up a list of 17 priority locations, including the key Prins Clausplein junction at The Hague and the A12 at Velperbroek.
“With hindsight, these types of crossings should have been constructed differently,” the ministry said. However, a spokesman told the Telegraaf that the roads are still safe to use and are constantly monitored.
