China’s “cheap” DeepSeek hits Dutch chip maker stocks
Shares in Dutch chip companies listed on the AEX in Amsterdam fell on Monday following the launch of Chinese A1 chatbot DeepSeek.
The chatbot is said to have cost just $6 million to develop and to use far fewer microchips to reach its current level of performance than its OpenAI and Google competitors.
If DeepSeek does require fewer chips then that could impact on Dutch companies involved in chip technology, experts say.
ASML lost 9% in early trading in Amsterdam while competitors Besi and ASM International were down over 10%. ASML and Besi had recovered a little by mid afternoon but ASMI remained down 10.71% with an hour’s trading to go.
According to the The Wall Street Journal DeepSeek may have required more power to develop than its inventors have admitted.
Nevertheless, shares in AI-related companies based in the US such as Nvidia, Meta, Tesla and Microsoft also fell when the US markets opened.
