Champions League: PSV shock Slot while Feyenoord slump in Lille
PSV Eindhoven spoiled Arne Slot’s return to the Netherlands as a dramatic turnaround at the end of the first half handed Liverpool their first defeat in the Champions League.
With his team already assured of a place in the last 16, Slot rested several key players, including captain Virgil van Dijk, striker Mo Salah and goalkeeper Allison Becker.
And PSV took full advantage, despite twice going behind in the first half, to claim the points that give them a seeded position in the play-off round under the new league format.
Cody Gakpo gave the visitors the lead against his former club from the penalty spot after Joey Veerman fouled Federico Chiesa as he tried to control an overhit pass.
Minutes later PSV levelled with a marvellous piece of play by Johan Bakayoko, who flummoxed two Liverpool defenders with a neat take-down before opening up and smashing the ball past Caoimhin Kelleher.
Saibari
Liverpool went back in front when Walter Benitez could only parry a shot by Chiesa straight into the path of Harvey Elliott, who was standing unmarked and just onside.
With half-time looming Veerman made amends for his error, stealing the ball in midfield and charging forward before laying a short ball off to Ismael Saibiri, who beat Kelleher from a tight angle.
And as the clock ran down PSV launched an attack that started with Benitez in goal. Saibari’s quick footwork and measured pass released Mauro Junior and the Brazilian’s shot across goal was turned in with the faintest of touches by Ricardo Pepi.
The second half was inevitably less eventful, with Saibari missing the best chance to extend the lead when he dawdled in front of goal in the 73rd minute.
Liverpool’s chances of an equaliser disappeared when substitute Amara Nallo was dismissed just four minutes after taking the field for hauling down Bakayoko as he broke away.
Feyenoord
The other Dutch club in the competition, Feyenoord, were on the end of a 6-1 thrashing in Lille to quash their hopes of qualifying directly for the knock-out phase.
The French side took an early lead through Ousame Sahraoui, but Santiago Giménez equalised after 16 minutes when he tapped in Gernot Trauner’s header to keep Feyenoord’s hopes of a top eight finish alive.
But the Mexican striker departed the field injured after half an hour, followed swiftly by goalkeeper Justin Bijlow, prompting a second-half collapse by Feyenoord.
Trauner turned the ball into his own net to give Lille the lead back and another own goal 15 minutes into the second half, as Angel Gomes’s shot looped in off David Hancko, left the Rotterdammers with a mountain to climb.
Three in five
Lille then scored three times in five minutes, including a second own goal by the luckless Trauner, who also received a yellow card earlier in the game. It was the first time Feyenoord have conceded six goals in a European match.
The French side progressed directly to the last 16, while Feyenoord have a 50% chance of meeting PSV in the play-off round between the teams finishing between ninth and 24 place in the league phase.
If the clubs avoid each other in Friday’s draw they will play Italian clubs instead, with PSV taking on Juventus while Feyenoord face AC Milan, who are reportedly in talks to sign Gimenez from the Rotterdam club before the January transfer deadline.
Fan trouble
Ten Feyenoord fans were arrested in Lille on Wednesday for allegedly defying a ban on travelling to the match, while more than 50 others were detained at the border.
French police had warned supporters that they risked a six-month jail term, a €30,000 fine and a ban from Lille’s stadium if they tried to enter the city. The club had asked the authorities to allow 1,000 fans to attend the game, but their pleas were rejected at a meeting last week.
