Antoinette Rijpma-De Jong wins European allround sprint title

Antoinette Rijpma-De Jong won her fourth successive European allround speed skating title at the Thialf ice rink in Heerenveen on Sunday, narrowly holding off fellow Dutch woman and world title holder Joy Beune.

Norway’s Ragne Wiklund took the bronze, becoming the first Norwegian woman to win an allround European medal.

In the men’s event, it was the first time in 14 years that the title was not taken by a Dutchman. That gold went to Norway’s Sander Eitrem, who became the first Norwegian to win the title since Johann Olav Koss in 1991. The silver was won by Norway’s Peder Kongshaug and Dutchman Beau Snellink won the bronze.

The allround combination event comprises 500m, 5000m, 1500m and 10,000m for men, and 500m, 3000m, 1500m, 5000m for women.

Earlier in the weekend, the Dutch had a clean sweep in the sprint competition, winning all six medals.
