The KNMI weather bureau has issued a code yellow weather warning for strong winds on New Year’s Eve and January 1.

The warning applies to Noord-Holland and the Wadden islands and, the KNMI says, the southwesterly winds could reach up to 80 kph on land.

The weather warning has already led officials in The Hague to order the neighbourhoods of Scheveningen and Duindorp to set fire to their traditional year end beach bonfires on Monday night rather than December 31 as planned.

Delft too has said New Year bonfires should take place on December 30 because of the high winds.

Amsterdam officials will decide on Tuesday if the city’s organised firework displays should go ahead or not. Consumer fireworks are banned in the Dutch capital and 18 other cities.

The strong winds on the coast may also have an impact on New Year swims, and Egmond aan Zee has already cancelled its event. The biggest New Year swim takes place at Scheveningen which attracts some 10,000 participants.
