A Russian engineer who used to work for ASML is under arrest and facing trial for violating sanctions and stealing documents from the chip machinery maker, current affairs show Nieuwsuur has reported.

The man, 43, is due to appear in court on Monday for a pro-forma hearing to decide if he should be further remanded in custody.

Nieuwsuur said the stolen information helped the development of the Russian chip industry and he was paid several tens of thousands of euros for the documents.

ASML confirmed the theft of information to Nieuwsuur but declined to comment further ahead of the main trial.

The man used to work for Delft start-up Mapper Lithography, which went bust in 2018, and more recently for another Dutch chip maker, NXP, Nieuwsuur said.
