Quick Boys notch up another Eredivisie scalp as Fortuna flop
Amateur football club Quick Boys have claimed another scalp in the Dutch cup by knocking out Eredivisie club Fortuna Sittard in the second round.
The team from Katwijk went behind midway through the first half when Alessio de Cruz scored from the visitors’ first real chance. But Nick Broekhuizen and Milan Zonneveld responded to give Quick Boys a 2-1 lead at half-time.
Referee Bas Nijhuis had to suspend the match shortly afterwards as riot police broke up a clash between rival supporters and Fortuna fans set off fireworks in the dunes behind the stadium, causing a fire to break out.
But the interruption did not dampen the enthusiasm of Quick Boys as Zonneveld scored his second four minutes after the restart to secure their place in the third round.
The second division leaders reached the quarter-finals last year, knocking out professional clubs De Graafschap and NAC Breda before losing to AZ Alkmaar in a penalty shoot-out.
Feyenoord survived a scare in Maastricht as two goals by 18-year-old striker Zepiqueno Redmond proved the difference against MVV.
A blunder by defender Facundo González allowed Ilano Silva Timas to pull a goal back for MVV 15 minutes from the end, while Justin Bijlow made several good saves to secure the Rotterdammers’ progress.
There were no such problems for Eredivisie leaders PSV, who crushed Koninklijke HFC 8-0, with Ricardo Pepi and Ivan Perisic both scoring twice.
RKC Waalwijk shrugged off their relegation fears to dispatch Cambuur Leeuwarden 4-1, while Excelsior progressed with a 3-1 win at FC Eindhoven.
Wednesday’s fixtures include three clashes between Eredivisie teams as Sparta host Go Ahead Eagles, Heracles host NEC Nijmegen and AZ play Groningen. Ajax face IJmuiden-based club Telstar in Amsterdam on Thursday.
