Three minors have been arrested for suspected arson after Bernie’s Beachclub in Zandvoort, owned by Prince Bernhard Jr and his partner Menno de Jong, was destroyed by a fire on Sunday.

Two other suspects are still being sought by police.

The fire is thought to have started outside the beach club which is part of the adjacent Zandvoort race track. However, it spread inside and quickly engulfed the floor, leaving firefighters unable to extinguish the fire from within and instead leading them to a controlled burning of the building.

The club was empty at the time of the fire and there are no reported injuries. Police are still searching for a motive.

Plumes of smoke led officials to send out an NL-alert, warning locals to keep their windows and doors shut and to turn off their air conditioners. That alert was withdrawn at 8:20 pm on Sunday evening and the fire was extinguished by 9 pm.

Prince Bernhard is the son of princess Margriet, sister of princess Beatrix, and Pieter van Vollenhoven.

Bernie’s is the third beach club to burn down recently in Zandvoort and Bloemendaal aan Zee. In August, the popular restaurant Hippie Fish was destroyed by fire.
