More than 100 flights cancelled as strong winds hit the north
More than 100 flights to and from Schiphol airport were cancelled on Friday because of the stormy weather and the KNMI weather bureau has issued a code yellow warning for all but the south of the country.
The airport authority is recommending travellers check with their airline first to see if their flights are affected. Both incoming and outgoing flights have been hit by the cancellations.
Train services have already been disrupted and services reduced between Hilversum and Almere because of a tree on the track. Drivers are also facing difficult conditions on some roads and the Markerwaarddijk which connects Lelystad with Enkhuizen has been closed to lorries and cars with trailers.
The KNMI says winds of up to 90 kph will hit the west and northwest of the country, but could be as strong as 120 kph on the Wadden Sea islands.
The stormy weather will continue on Saturday when the Netherlands is hit by the tail end of storm Darragh, which caused considerable problems in Ireland earlier this week.
