More people donated to charity last year, with just over three-quarters of the population giving money or gifts to a good cause, according to new figures from national statistics office CBS.

In 2021, 68% of the population gave to charity and in 2022 73%. But last year the figure reached 76%, the CBS said.

There are wide differences based on income, with 52% of the lowest income households and 82% of the highest income families making a charitable donation in 2023. That means almost one in five of the richest 25% of households do not donate at all.

Older people are more likely to donate than the young, apart from the very oldest pensioners.

People in Limburg are least likely to donate – 68% of the southern province’s residents gave to a good cause last year.
