Home owners will pay an average increase of 4.8% in local authority taxes next year, according to calculations by home owners association Vereniging Eigen Huis.

The VEH looked at the plans of 113 of the 342 Dutch councils and found a wide variation in next year’s rises – including an increase of 39% in Renkum, a village of 31,000 people in Gelderland.

Local taxes include onroerendezaakbelasting (ozb), which covers general spending and is only paid by property owners, waste water tax (rioolheffing) and waste disposal tax (afvalstoffenheffing).

The average rise of some €45 takes the average bill for local authority taxes to just under €1,000 a year but there are major regional differences.

The calculations do not include many of the big Dutch cities, including Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Eindhoven. But in The Hague, the increase will average 3.9% and in Delft 5.9%, the VEH calculations show.

The VEH warns that local taxes are likely to rise considerably in 2026 because the government plans to slash its contribution to council budgets.
