Woman killed by falling tree as storm Conall battered the north
Storm Conall swept over the north of the Netherlands on Wednesday night, bringing down trees in winds of up to 130 kph.
In Lochem, between Apeldoorn and Enschede, a 19-year-old woman was killed when she was hit by a falling tree while out cycling. The accident happened around 7.15 pm.
Elsewhere falling trees damaged homes and vehicles, and caused several road closures, but no one was seriously hurt.
Insurers put the cost of the damage in millions but said they will have a better idea of the scale later on Thursday.
Storm Conall is now officially the second storm of this autumn, and the sixth in 2024, after gale force nine wind speeds were recorded in IJmuiden.
Ferry services between the mainland and Wadden Sea islands were cancelled because of the strong winds. Train travellers also experienced some disruption and dozens of flights were cancelled from and to Schiphol airport.
