Two wins and a draw for Dutch clubs in Europa League

There were wins for both Ajax and AZ in European football on Thursday night, but FC Twente had to be content with a draw.

Ajax beat Maccabi Tel Aviv 5-0 in what was the Amsterdammers’ seventh win in a row, putting them closer to a place in the next round of the European competition.

Ajax are currently joint second in the Europa League with 10 points from four games. They next play Real Sociedad away on November 28.

AZ, by contrast, won its first game in eight matches, beating Turkish side Fenerbahçe 3-1. Eighteen-year-old substitute Kees Smit scored AZ’s second goal. AZ next meet  Galatasaray on November 28.

There was disappointment for FC Twente, however, who drew 2-2 against Nice, after leading 2-0 for much of the match. Twente have now booked three draws in four Europa League games.  They next play Union SG on November 28.
