Two people have been killed during a police car chase when the car they were travelling in hit a passenger train at a level crossing in Berghem, near Oss.

The accident happened at around 1 am and has disrupted train traffic between Wijchen and Oss until at least 11 am, railway company NS said. The eight passengers on the train and the driver were unhurt and taken to their destination by taxi.

A police spokesman told broadcaster NOS they had given chase after receiving reports of a “suspicious vehicle”. According to local paper Brabants Dagblad the car had ignored an order to stop on the A50.

The train was on its way from Nijmegen to Den Bosch.

Meanwhile, one man has been arrested in Enschede after the stolen car he was driving in crashed when police gave chase. He too had ignored an order to stop.

The driver managed to get away after the crash but was picked up later by a police dog, NOS reported.
