Riot police were called out to deal with disturbances in Amsterdam Nieuw-West on Monday evening, after a group of youths went on the rampage, setting off fireworks and throwing stones at police.

According to the Parool around 100 youngsters were involved in the riot, which began shortly after 7 pm. They built barricades with wood and poles from market stalls and smashed the windows of a tram, which was later set on fire by fireworks.

One person was slightly injured in the trouble and three people were arrested, police said.

Calm was restored around 10 pm.

Locals told Parool journalists and Denk city councillor Süleyman Koyuncu that the riot were sparked by reports that a woman had been “beaten unconscious” by police when they broke up an illegal demonstration on Dam square in the centre of the city on Sunday.

One woman is known to have suffered a head wound when she was knocked to the ground.

Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema has banned all demonstrations in the city until Thursday following the trouble surrounding the Ajax Maccabi Tel Aviv football game.
