The strike by ProRail workers on Wednesday means there will be no trains in Noord-Holland and parts of Flevoland and Utrecht from 6 am to at least 9 am, Dutch railway firm NS said on Monday.

Maintenance workers and engineers are going on strike in support of their pay claim after talks between railway unions and ProRail broke down.

“ProRail workers have the right to strike but NS regrets the problems which travellers will experience,” the state-owned railway firm said. Although the strike will end at 9 am, it will take some time for normal services to resume.

Travelers heading for Schiphol can take a direct train from Amsterdam’s main railway station to the airport every 15 minutes.

On Friday the strike will move to the Utrecht and Amersfoort region and more strikes are scheduled for next week.

The FNV has called for a 13% rise for ProRail workers, who take care of safety and maintenance issues on the network. ProRail, which is 100% owned by the government, has offered an average of 5.2%, with 7.9% for people on the lowest salaries.

The sector’s current pay and conditions agreement expired in July.
