A team of doctors and nurses at the Radboud teaching hospital in Nijmegen assisted at the successful delivery of quadruplets earlier this week, the hospital said on social media.

Rare multiple births like this require extra attention, the hospital said. “Collegues from several hospital departments were present in the operating theatre. At least one doctor and a nurse are needed for each child. Anesthesiologists, operating assistants and a gynecologist were also present,” the hospital explained.

The sex of the children, or whether they were identical or fraternal, was not made public. Mother and babies are doing fine, the hospital said.

Quadruplets are extremely rare although they have become more common due to fertility treatment. There are only several thousand surviving groups worldwide.
