A resounding 4-0 win against Girona kept PSV in the hunt for Champions League qualification as they ended a three-match winless streak.

Malik Tillman twice opened up the Spanish team’s defence in the first half, starting with a long throw that was volleyed in from close range by Ryan Flamingo in the 12th minute.

Tillman doubled the advantage on 33 minutes when he was given space to drift into the penalty area from the left-hand side and finish with a low shot into the corner.

Girona’s chances of a comeback were effectively ended 10 minutes into the second half when Arnau Martinez’s clumsy challenge on Noa Lang earned him a second yellow card.

Substitute Ismael Saibari had the ball in the net shortly after coming on when he wriggled between two defenders and unleashed a powerful shot, but the video review panel ruled he had stood on a defender’s foot in the build-up.

Johan Bakayoko made the score 3-0 with a fierce strike from the edge of the area before Ladislav Krejci turned a ball into his own net under pressure from Saibari.

Captain Luuk de Jong praised his team-mates’ focus on a “fantastic” night. “The red card after the break was the turning point in this match, but we kept pressing and added a third and a fourth,” he told Ziggo Sport.

The result leaves PSV on five points from four matches and above the cut-off line of 24th place for the play-off places, although most of the fourth-round matches still have to be played.

Their next game in the competition is at home to Shakhtar Donetsk on November 27.
