No Lazio fans at “high risk” Ajax game, Amsterdam mayor rules
The Europa League match between Ajax and SS Lazio in Amsterdam on December 12 will be played without away supporters due to concerns over right-wing extremism and the risk of anti-Semitic and racist incidents, city police and mayor Femke Halsema have announced.
Both UEFA and local authorities have labeled the match “high risk” because of some Lazio fans’ history of right-wing extremism and violent behavior, including bringing weapons and fireworks to away games.
The decision follows trouble around the Ajax-Maccabi Tel Aviv match earlier in November, when Israeli fans were targeted with racist abuse, and several were attacked by local supporters.
Halsema has also called off a planned protest about anti-Semitism scheduled for Thursday evening on Amsterdam’s Dam square, which would have coincided with the busy Sinterklaas shopping period.
“This Thursday is one of the busiest late-night shopping periods of the year,” Halsema said, according to the Telegraaf. “The police do not have enough options to ensure the safety of both the demonstrators and the general public.”
The organisers of the protest, including Christians for Israel, are considering legal action to reverse the decision, the paper said.
The mayor said the protest has not been banned, but needs to be moved to a new location. The square by the city hall and Museumplein have been mentioned as possible alternatives.
