Netherlands 4-0 Hungary: Oranje prevail on anxious night
The Netherlands sealed their place in the quarter-finals of the Nations League with an ultimately comfortable win over a spirited Hungarian side in Amsterdam.
Oranje took the lead in surreal circumstances after the match was suspended for 13 minutes while Hungary’s assistant coach Adam Szalai was resuscitated beside the pitch.
Staff and players were visibly distressed when Szalai collapsed eight minutes into the game, but he quickly regained consciousness and was taken to hospital by ambulance. The Hungarian FA issued a statement at half-time describing the 36-year-old’s condition as stable.
Referee Jesús Gil Manzano was then called to the monitor to review a handball in the penalty area that took place immediately before the medical stoppage 15 minutes earlier. He had little choice but to award a penalty that Wout Weghorst, given a rare chance to start for the national team, calmly dispatched.
Thirteen minutes of injury time were added to the first half, 12 of which had elapsed when the Dutch were given a second penalty when Donyell Malen was brought down by Zsolt Nagy. This time Cody Gakpo converted the spot-kick to give Oranje a cushion at half-time.
Dumfries shines
Weghorst almost added a third straight after half-time when his shot hit the crossbar. Instead it was Denzel Dumfries who claimed the third when he met Donyell Malen’s cross with a superb diagonal volley.
Teun Koopmeiners headed in a fourth five minutes from the end after Dumfries picked him out with a perfectly weighted ball, and almost had another when his volleyed rebound rattled the crossbar two minutes later.
Head coach Ronald Koeman said he was satisfied with the result, but criticised his players for letting the tempo of the game drop in the second half. “We could have had 10,” he said.
“We had a lot of good moments, but also a lot of moments when we didn’t play the right ball in attack and we didn’t have enough intensity in defence. It sounds strange when you’ve won 4-0, but it wasn’t good in that regard.”
A plus point for Koeman was the return to the team of Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong after a 14-month absence through injury. “He showed his quality at times, with his dribbling that took players out and made space for his team-mates,” Koeman said.
In the other match in the group, Germany thrashed Bosnia and Herzegovina 7-0 to confirm their progress as group winners and seal relegation for their opponents. Bosnia and Herzegovina will host the Dutch in the final round on Tuesday night.
