If people in the Netherlands had a straight choice between Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and former president Donald Trump, 87% would opt for Harris, according to a poll by Europe Elects.

The poll, on the eve of the US elections, shows notable support for Harris in Western European countries where the far right has been making inroads. In the Netherlands, for example, almost 30% of voters opted for far-right parties in the general election a year ago.

The most support for Harris is in Denmark, where 96% of the population would vote for Harris, followed by Sweden and Finland (90%). Norway is just behind the Netherlands on 86%, followed by Germany (85%), Ireland (84%) and France (83%).

A similar poll by British agency YouGov showed that even for supporters of centre right parties Harris remains the preferred candidate. She is, for instance, the choice of 89% of Venstre voters in Sweden, 78% of CDU/CSU voters in Germany, 66% of PP voters in Spain and 58% of Conservative voters in Britain.

The Europe Elects figures also highlight the sharp differences between Western and Eastern Europe. In Hungary and Bulgaria, 62% of the population would vote for Trump, as would 66% of Georgians.

The poll excludes people who did not have an opinion either way.
