Dutch “displeased” with Israel over Dutch Hamas links report

Justice minister David van Weel has said the Netherlands has made it clear to Israel that the government is displeased about the distribution of a report in the Netherlands that makes unsubstantiated claims about links between Dutch organisations and Hamas.

The report was distributed to a number of MPs by Israel’s ministry for the diaspora shortly before Dutch MPs were due to debate the trouble in Amsterdam, during which several Israelis were attacked on the grounds that they were Jewish.

The document, entitled Dutch-based organizations with ties to Hamas behind the November pogrom in Amsterdam purports to show links between six Dutch pro-Palestine organisations and Hamas. It also accused the Palestine community foundation PGNL of having “a major, driving and organising role” in the attacks on Maccabi fans.

Van Weel told MPs in his briefing that neither the accusations nor any supporting evidence have been shared with the Dutch authorities through formal channels.

“These are serious allegations and, therefore, they are being reviewed by the relevant competent authorities,” Van Weel said.

However, he said, making such public accusations could have a negative impact on the individuals involved and contradicts Dutch legal principles. The cabinet, he said, “considers the manner in which the report from the Israeli ministry was disseminated to be unusual and, given the potential negative consequences for Dutch residents, undesirable.”

The Dutch counter terrorism unit NCTV is reviewing whether there was unwanted foreign interference by Israeli authorities in the Netherlands in the wake of the violence in Amsterdam earlier this month.

Foreign affairs minister Caspar Veldkamp said earlier in the week he can not anticipate the results but confirmed the report is likely to be completed at the end of next week. He also stressed that he understood the emotions of the Israeli cabinet.

As well as issuing the report about links to Hamas, Israeli ministers were quick to condemn events in the Netherlands, while Amsterdam police were still trying to establish what had happened on the night itself.

Israel has also claimed several times that the Dutch authorities were warned about risks surrounding the Ajax Maccabi Tel Aviv game, but Veldkamp and other Dutch officials have denied receiving any notifications.
