No trains are running in the provinces of Zuid-Holland, Zeeland and West-Brabant on Monday morning because of a strike by ProRail workers.

The strike, from 6 am to 9 am, will cause widespread disruption for several hours after that as services return to normal, ProRail said.

The strike means no national or international trains can use the high-speed track between Belgium, Rotterdam and Amsterdam either and several Eurostar trains have been cancelled. People travelling from the south to Haarlem or Hoofddorp will also experience problems.

Motoring organisation ANWB said it expected heavy rush hour traffic because of the strike. Monday traditionally has the most jams and the “average November Monday results in 700 kilometres of jams at the height of rush hour, a spokesman said.

Monday is the third day of strikes by ProRail workers. On Wednesday Eindhoven and Maastricht will be targeted and on Friday services in Zwolle, Groningen and Arnhem will take centre stage.

The FNV has called for a 13% rise for ProRail workers, who take care of safety and maintenance issues on the network. ProRail, which is 100% owned by the government, has offered an average of 5.2%, with 7.9% for people on the lowest salaries.

The sector’s current pay and conditions agreement expired in July.
