Commuters hit as ProRail workers strike in Utrecht, Amersfoort
There were widespread problems for rail commuters on Friday morning as ProRail workers went on strike at key parts of the network in the centre of the Netherlands.
The strike, from 6 am to 9 am, disrupted train services around Utrecht and Amersfoort and had knock on effects on services to Schiphol, Leiden, Deventer and Almere as well. Good trains also experienced problems.
Although the strike ended at 9 am, the disruption is likely to continue for several hours as services get back to normal, ProRail said.
International trains to Germany are using a different route and the journey make take longer. International trains to Brussels and France are not affected.
The strikes continue next week. On Monday the Rotterdam, The Hague and Roosendaal network will be hit, and on Wednesday Eindhoven and Maastricht will be targeted. On Friday services in Zwolle, Groningen and Arnhem will take centre stage. The timing of those strikes has not yet been confirmed.
The FNV has called for a 13% rise for ProRail workers, who take care of safety and maintenance issues on the network. ProRail, which is 100% owned by the government, has offered an average of 5.2%, with 7.9% for people on the lowest salaries.
The sector’s current pay and conditions agreement expired in July.
