A girl from Belgium has been arrested in connection with threats about school shootings in Breda, Dutch police have confirmed.

The arrest was made at around 1 am and police are saying nothing further about the case while the investigation continues. They had said earlier on Sunday that a minor from Belgium appeared to be behind the messages but that they did not expect any problems.

The arrest follows social media messages at the weekend which said there would be shootings at several schools in Breda, some 25 kilometres from the Belgian border. The Onze Lieve Vrouwelyceum, Newmancollege and the Mencia de Mendoza Lyceum were mentioned by name. All are part of the Libreon school group.

The messages, according to local broadcaster Omroep Brabant included a photograph of a pistol with bullets and the text “Everyone is going to die”.

The girl’s exact role in the threats is still being determined.

The Telegraaf reported on Monday that “left-wing pro-Palestine groups” were behind a string of threats at schools across the country over the past two weeks, including 10 involving schools in Amsterdam.

“The aim is to create chaos,” one source told the paper, adding that the media reports at the moment are the “tip of the iceberg”.

Earlier this month, a 14-year-old boy was arrested in connection with threats against schools in Nijmegen and Rotterdam, the Telegraaf said.
