An anonymous donor has handed out some €22,500 in €50 notes to people using a food bank in the Brabant town of Oss, the AD reported on Thursday.

The donor placed two notes in 224 plain envelopes which were distributed among the food bank’s clientele by staff, much to their surprise.

One client told the paper she would give the money to her parents, who were going on holiday. Another said he would pay off a debt. A third woman said she would give the money to her grandchildren.

“We live in a world where we do so little for each other,” said client Louise, who turns 50 at the end of the month. “My daughter has her birthday then too,” she said. “We are going to celebrate with this money and make good memories.”

The mysterious donor told the AD that she had always donated money to the food bank and when she was left a small inheritance this summer, she decided to give it away as well.

“I hope I can inspire others to make a donation,” she told the paper. “No matter how big it is.”
