Two of the four coalition parties have voted for a motion requiring all local councils to press ahead with organising accommodation for refugees, even thought the right-wing government plans to withdraw the legislation.

Both the VVD and NSC voted in favour of the plan, which would see refugees “spread” all over the country, on Tuesday.

The motion, proposed by ChristenUnie’s Don Cedar, calls on the government to make it possible for councils to continue to provide accommodation up to the point when the legislation is withdrawn and to give officials clarity about the plans.

The legislation requires all local authorities provide some sort of accommodation for refugees and so spread the burden more fairly. Some 160 of the Netherlands’ 342 local authorities have not made any housing for refugees available since 2012.

As yet, the government has not made any moves to scrap the legislation, which was passed after the last election. A large majority of local councils also want it to stay in place
