Feyenoord booked their first away win in the Champions League in more than 20 years in a chaotic match in Spain featuring two own goals, two missed penalties and a sackful of incidents.

The Rotterdammers were looking to get back on track after their 4-0 home defeat to Leverkusen in the opening round, but went behind after 19 minutes when David Lopez prodded home from a corner.

Girona could have been 3-0 up by then after Viktor Tsyganov missed two good early chances. But Feyenoord drew level in the 23rd minute when Igo Paixão’s free-kick was deflected in off the chest of defender Yangel Herrera.

Ten minutes later Quinten Timber intercepted a stray pass out of defence and the ball was swiftly played forward to Antoni Milambo, who finished clinically from just inside the penalty area.

Ayase Ueda was presented with a chance to make it 3-1 when Ivan Martin fouled Timber as he tried to pounce on a slack pass by goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga, but Ueda’s penalty was punched away by the Argentinian.

Van de Beek

Shortly after the break a cross by Girona midfielder Donny van de Beek found its way into the net via David Hancko, but Van de Beek was adjudged to have been just offside.

The former Ajax favourite was soon celebrating when he tapped in an equaliser in the 73rd minute for his first goal in two and a half years. Van de Beek’s strike was a relief for Bojan Miovski, who had missed a chance from the penalty six minutes earlier after goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther brought him down.

But the last slice of luck went to the Rotterdammers when Hancko’s pass to Julian Carranza was deflected past Gazzaniga by Ladislav Krejci.

Feyenoord’s next match is away to Portuguese club Benfica on October 23.
